A comic from three years ago that is even more true today:
A dear friend, who is mildly baffled by it all, refers to the Dallas Mavericks as my “sportball team.” I know I don’t seem like the type. And I wasn’t. I didn’t keep up with any kind of sportball for decades.
But five or six years ago, my son’s general love of sports solidified into an utter devotion to basketball. I wanted to be able to talk with him about the things he cared about, but I was daunted. I couldn’t suddenly and genuinely care about the vast and intricately detailed world of the NBA. But I decided I could care about one team. Naturally I picked his favorite — the Mavs — and started paying attention.
It was the perfect time. That first season was a crossover year between an old era (Dirk Nowitzki) and a new one (Luka Dončić). And it was the perfect team to follow. They have been exciting and deeply lovable from the start. Plus, with the way players move around, I now have reasons to care about lots of other teams that have former Mavs players on them. Even — dare I say it — the Celtics, whom they now face in the NBA Finals, starting tonight!
Okay, before we all get on with our days, I have to show off my Mavs craft project:
Several weeks ago, my family got to go to our very first playoff game! There were rally towels on every seat. After the game, we were the last ones out of our section and my husband gathered up the towels our fellow fans had left behind. After a good washing, I sewed them into this twin-size blanket! I sew by hand, so it took me until last night to finish, but it’s done in time for the Finals.
Let’s Go Mavs!
